The final remains of Eli Amegashitsi, the one many have loved and described as a political stranger and the pillar of women in and around the Ketu South Constituency was laid to rest on Saturday, May 14, 2022. Hundreds of party loyalists of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from far and near were in the constituency to bid her final farewell.
A tribute by the Constituency Secretary for NDC, Desmond Kwaku Tsewu, traced her efforts from 1992 when she joined the Eagle Party and subsequently the National Democratic Congress and was present at its inaugural ceremony at Cape Coast in the Central Region.
According to the tribute, “Madam Eli Amegashitsi has since rendered her services to put together both men and women in the then Ketu South District. In 1994, she became extremely active in the organization of the branches within constituency”.
Madam Amegashitsi used her good interpersonal relations to work with everyone on any party assignment within the constituency, the adjoining constituencies and the entire Volta Region at large.
In 1996 the late Madam Eli Amegashitsi was one of the team members who played a pivotal role in the 1996 general elections which gave Ketu South a face lift and later named the ‘World Bank’ in 2005.
In 2005, the late Eli became the Somey Fugo Deputy Women’s Organizer and subsequently elected as the substantive Constituency Women’s Organizer in 2009, a position she held until after her second victory in the 2014 constituency elections when she had to resign as a prerequisite to contesting the position of the regional women’s organizer. She lost in that election
She however bounced back in 2018, got elected as the Constituency Women’s Organizer again in addition to her elevation as the First female Chairperson for Somey Fugo Zone and remained at post until her passing.
All have recognized her active roles in the NDC in government and in opposition as she will be remembered for her countless contributions to the party including “her incredible mobilization of the women’s front through the Women’s Caucus both within and outside Ketu South”.
“It will take us a long while to find any exact replacement and she will be sorely missed by all of us. It is our fervent prayer that the good Lord will grant her a perfect rest until we meet again someday to continue our political activities in the world beyond,” the tribute stated.
“Today, we are here to mourn our beloved Sister, Eli Amegashitsi whose lifeless body lies before us”, these were words from The Global Evangelical Church, Tokor as the church has acknowledged the fact that, “Sister Eli joined the Global Evangelical Church in the year 2015”.
She had been formerly worshipping with the End Time Ministries at Denu but due to the nature of her work “she could not fellowship with us every Sunday because she had to attend meetings and other functions as a result of her position in her party. Nonetheless, she was always in church whenever she was around”.
The Church again emphasized on her free gifts to the needy, “she gave out freely to the church to take care of certain needs anytime she was in church, and she always helped the needy”.
In attendance were, the former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adzaho, Director of elections of the NDC, Elvis Afriye Ankrah, National Women Organizer, Dr. Luisa Hannah Bisiw, Deputy National Communication Officer, Godwin Akoo Gun, all the 18 Women and Deputy Women Organizers, MPs from Keta, Anlo and Akatsi South, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Kwame Sepe, Benard Ahiafor, current and former MPs for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Albert Zigah, Fifi Kwetey as well as the Volta Regional Executives led by the Chairman, Henry Ametepe and Secretary, James Gunu, former MP for Anlo, Clement Kofi Humado, and more.
She died at the age of 56 and left behind three children plus other dependants.
