“You don’t choose a job career based on the lucrativeness and beauty of that job or the love you have for that particular work, but choose it because you are capable and competent considering your temperament…. anything apart from that may make you regret on that field of work,” these was an advice from the Central Regional (CR) president of Guidance and Counseling Association.
According to Mr Anthony Sampson, failure on the part of many job seekers to consider their temperament when choosing a career was the reason some, among other things, commit suicide following pressures from the work.
He said, parents especially were mostly the cause of that saying, most parents force job careers on their kids without knowing what it takes someone to do that job. He therefore advised parents to desist from that and urged them to instead, do broader consultations and seek advice from counselors.
“There are circumstances where some parents say, ‘as for my this son, I will make every effort for him to become a medical doctor in future’ without knowing the child’s temperament whether he’s melancholy, phlegmatic, sanguine or choleric because there is a required temperament for someone who want to be a doctor”,Mr Sampson explained
The president was addressing Junior High School (JHS) 3 pupils in the Anomabo, Saltpond and Yamoransa circuits in the Mfantseman Municipality of the CR at a Career Guidance seminar organized by an education initiative called Boys and Girls Club of Ghana in Anomabo.
Mr Sampson who doubles as an assistant headmaster of Saltpond Methodist Senior High School (MEHISCO) who was speaking under the topic “our temperament and career choice”, however said, temperaments are improvable and repairable.
“yes, something can be done about temperaments…assuming you want to be a teacher for instance and you you’re a melancholy, a good psychologist or counselor can train you to be able to take up that profession even though that will not be like someone who was born naturally sanguine”, Mr Sampson added.
Mr Isaac Kweku Quainoo, the executive director of the Club in an interview with Kojo Ata Kakrah Abrowah said the seminar was part of series of events being organized by the club to equip the BECE candidates in the area in order to help them pass their pending examination and also acquaint them with their future occupational choices.
He revealed that the club had started free vacation classes for the candidates in both private and public schools in the circuits including seminars on every Friday which was going to be done till schools reopen.
He expressed his gratitude to groups and individuals who had been supporting the club in executing its mandates and then appealed to parents to allow their children to participate in the ongoing program.
