In a commendable humanitarian effort, the Lions Clubs International Foundation has stepped forward to provide crucial support to the victims of the recent Akosombo Dam Spillage Flood in the Volta Region towns of Mepe and Keta. The foundation, through its local district, Lions International District 418 – Ghana, allocated a generous grant of $10,000 to assist those affected by the devastating floods on the 20th of January 2024.
The Situation
The Akosombo Dam, a vital hydroelectric facility on the Volta River, plays a significant role in Ghana’s energy production. However, heavy rainfall and subsequent dam spillage led to severe flooding in several towns around Mepe and Keta (which were also hit by tidal waves). Homes were submerged, farmlands destroyed, and livelihoods disrupted. The affected communities are grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
