Local Government Ministry Launches Accra City Synthesis Report to Tackle Urban Development Challenges

The Accra City Synthesis Report is expected to guide policymakers and stakeholders in addressing urban development challenges and shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for the city.

With a population of approximately five million, Accra stands as a central player in Ghana’s political and economic landscape, influenced by both national and global events. To address the city’s complex challenges, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development has partnered with African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC) to launch the Accra City Synthesis Report.

This report aims to generate insights and evidence to improve living conditions, services, and opportunities for all residents, especially those in disadvantaged communities.

Compared to many African countries, Ghana has managed urbanization relatively effectively, creating economies of scale in Accra that have boosted productivity in densely populated areas. However, the city still grapples with development challenges, with an unemployment rate nearly double the national average and lagging infrastructure in critical sectors.

Speaking at the launch, Hon. O.B. Amoah, Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, highlighted the shared commitment between the Ministry and ACRC to foster sustainable urban development. “The Accra City Report sheds light on urban challenges, providing us with valuable insights and new approaches based on rigorous research and local context,” he stated. Amoah also noted that various stakeholders contributed to the report, which focuses on structural transformation, land and connectivity, housing, neighborhood and district economic development, and informal settlements.

ACRC CEO Diana Mitlin emphasized the importance of the collaboration with Accra to advance understanding of issues like waste reform. “Our partnership with the city of Accra allows us to dive deeply into solutions that address Accra’s unique urban dynamics,” Mitlin remarked.
