A key figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration will embark on significant constitutional, administrative, and legal reforms that will leave a lasting legacy. Speaking during an interview on TV3 on Friday, the lawmaker emphasized that Mahama’s performance during his tenure will be pivotal for the NDC’s prospects in the 2028 elections.
According to Hon. Iddrisu, President Mahama will leverage the NDC’s anticipated parliamentary majority to address the growing demands for constitutional reform. “The Ghanaian people have spoken, and one of their key demands is a review of the 1992 Constitution,” he said.
He explained that President Mahama plans to build on the work of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who initiated the Constitutional Review Commission.
“What President Mahama will do is establish a Constitutional Review Implementation Committee to fine-tune the recommendations made by the earlier review. This committee will ensure the proposals are translated into actionable reforms,” he stated.
Path to Constitutional Amendments
Hon. Iddrisu detailed the steps President Mahama will take to implement constitutional changes, including working with the Council of State for entrenched provisions and seeking parliamentary approval for non-entrenched ones.
“There will be no need for additional consultations, as the groundwork has already been laid by the previous Constitutional Review Committee,” he added.
Legacy of Reform and Renewal
Iddrisu believes these reforms will be one of the most remarkable legacies of Mahama’s presidency. He described the move as a necessary step toward responding to the political aspirations of Ghanaians and ensuring the governance framework evolves to meet the needs of the people.
Vindication of Mahama’s Comeback
Addressing skeptics who doubted Mahama’s return to the presidency, Iddrisu remarked,
“Those who sang funeral dirges for Mahama’s political career are now silent. His comeback has proven them wrong. The vision of a Mahama presidency is not just possible—it is a reality.”
He said the anticipated reforms, coupled with Mahama’s commitment to addressing unemployment, the cost of living, and other pressing national issues, set the stage for a transformative presidency that aims to leave Ghana better positioned for the future.
