Former Minority Leader Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has outlined key governance priorities for President-elect John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing his commitment to creating a just society, fostering economic prosperity, and implementing a lean government structure. Speaking in an interview on TV3 on Friday, the seasoned lawmaker assured Ghanaians that Mahama’s administration will prioritize the welfare of citizens and uphold the rule of law.
Lean Government Structure
Hon. Iddrisu revealed that Mahama intends to govern with no more than 23 ministries, a significant reduction compared to the current administration. Of these, 19 will be cabinet-level ministries, with deputies assigned where necessary. Additionally, Mahama will appoint 16 regional ministers, consistent with Ghana’s decentralization framework, to represent the presidency across all regions.
“From the work done by his team, President Mahama will run Ghana with a maximum of 23 ministries. This lean structure is intended to ensure efficiency and reduce waste,” Hon. Iddrisu noted. He further highlighted that the new government would focus on strengthening local governance through District Chief Executives who will support Regional Ministers.
Support for Local Businesses
Hon. Iddrisu assured that Mahama would prioritize the creation of opportunities for all Ghanaians, irrespective of their affiliations, and protect local businesses.
“President Mahama is committed to securing and protecting Ghanaian businesses that provide employment for Ghanaians. He himself has promised to chair the National Export Council to ensure this vision is realized,” he stated.
Addressing Current Challenges
The MP for Tamale South criticized the outgoing Akufo-Addo administration for its role in Ghana’s economic downturn, citing unprecedented hardships, high costs of living, and rising unemployment. He expressed confidence that Mahama’s leadership would address these challenges head-on.
“Ghanaians are facing unprecedented levels of hardship. President Mahama will respond to these crises with policies that prioritize job creation, fiscal responsibility, and economic stability,” he added.
Acknowledgment of Civil Society
Haruna Iddrisu also commended civil society organizations for holding the current administration accountable.
“Civil society has played a vital role in ensuring that the NPP was held accountable for its actions and inactions, which have brought Ghana to this point,” he remarked.
As Ghana looks toward a new chapter under John Dramani Mahama, Haruna Iddrisu expressed optimism that the incoming government will deliver on its promises to build a prosperous, inclusive, and just society.
