The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has warned that individuals involved in the recently signed USD800 million gas processing contract, if found to have caused financial loss to the state, will be held accountable under the law.
Speaking during a community engagement in Ablekuma West as part of his Phase 3 tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Mahama expressed concern over government’s handling of the contract.
He criticised the signing of large financial commitments at the “dying stage” of the administration, which could bind the country for many years.
He emphasised that the USD800 million contract demands parliamentary approval, given the significant amount involved.
Mr. Mahama warned that failure to present the agreement to Parliament for scrutiny would result in severe consequences for those responsible, should the NDC return to power.
“If the contract is not brought before Parliament for approval, those who sign it will be prosecuted for causing financial loss to the state under a future NDC government,” Mr. Mahama cautioned.
His comments come amid growing concerns about transparency and accountability in major financial agreements entered into by the current administration as its tenure nears an end.
