Gabby Otchere Darko, a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the two sides of Parliament to exercise restraint and maturity when the House convenes on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
According to him, the august house must by all means work out outstanding differences to avoid any form of chaos.
“Parliament must, by all means, avoid a situation of seeming chaos and anarchy Tuesday. I suggest the two Leaders and Speakers meet before then to agree or agree to disagree on the next steps. Not long to Dec 7, let maturity be our guide and guard,” he wrote in a post on Tuesday.
This comes after the Speaker’s declaration of four seats vacant last Thursday- giving the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) the majority status- was stayed by a Supreme Court order the next day.
The NDC caucus of the House on Sunday, October 20 at a press conference said it has no recognition for the court order, calling it an interference in parliamentary affairs.
“We will jealously protect our new Majority status and will not bow, retreat nor surrender our lawfully earned status. We will also not abdicate our responsibility to the people no matter what! Nothing, absolutely nothing, will change this position! We are fortified that the ‘proceedings’ of Parliament ‘shall not’ be ‘impeached or questioned in any court or place out of Parliament.’”
“Any interference with the business of Parliament is unlawful, unacceptable and shall be resisted. We have never hidden our position that we are in this Parliament for the ordinary Ghanaian.”
