Erik ten Hag will be sacked by Manchester United whatever happens in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
The Dutchman will see his two-year tenure at Old Trafford come to an end having only managed an eighth placed finish in the Premier League this season, the club’s lowest league finish since 1990, according to The Guardian.
United need to win Saturday’s clash with neighbours Manchester City at Wembley if they are to play European football next season, but it is thought that will not be enough or the former Ajax boss to keep his job after a decision by new United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The Guardian report adds that Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran McKenna, Graham Potter and Thomas Frank are on United’s shortlist of potential replacements, although Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Pochettino has muddied the waters somewhat, with McKenna and Frank also being considered by the Blues, who have already employed the other three on the list.
United continue to state that no decision has yet been made on Ten Hag’s future.
Ten Hag has been insistent that he is not going to walk away from Old Trafford this summer, and facing questions from the media on Thursday he baulked at suggestions that the FA Cup final will be his final game in charge.
When pressed, he said: “I have nothing to say. I’m just focusing on the job I have to do and that is first win the game on Saturday and then the project, to keep going with the project.”
The Dutchman then defended his record at United, adding: “There are some very good things, players coming through and on Saturday we have a big opportunity to win the next trophy.
“After every season you review it and we will see where we are in the project, things we have to change.
“I came here to win trophies. Saturday is the next opportunity. We earned this opportunity as a team and now we have to go for it.
“In the last ten years, not so many trophies in this club but we have an opportunity to win two trophies in two years.”
