Mastercard launches free financial literacy course

Mastercard Academy has launched a free online course, “Master Your Card: Finance Demystified,” designed to help consumers build a solid foundation in personal finance management.

Created in collaboration with the Mastercard Centre for Inclusive Growth, the course aims to improve financial literacy by providing individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the increasingly complex world of personal finance.

According to the S&P Global FinLit Survey, a staggering 3.5 billion adults, primarily in developing countries, lack basic financial knowledge.

This is a critical issue, given that only 33% of adults worldwide are considered financially literate. Mastercard’s new course is designed to address this gap by offering accessible financial education to anyone with an internet connection, regardless of their geographic location.

The “Master Your Card: Finance Demystified” course offers an engaging, user-friendly platform that includes interactive lessons, quizzes, and real-world examples. It covers four major topics: electronic payments, budgeting, credit scores, and financial security. These areas were selected to provide consumers with a comprehensive understanding of the financial tools available to them and how they can use these tools to improve their financial well-being.

This course is particularly aimed at underserved communities and young adults, who may lack access to financial education in traditional settings.

Mastercard’s initiative aligns with the company’s mission to connect one billion people globally to the digital economy by 2025, offering a scalable solution to help individuals achieve financial independence and avoid common financial pitfalls.

Driss Belemlih, Executive Vice President of Customer Delivery for the Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA) region at Mastercard, said, “As Mastercard, we are dedicated to democratising financial literacy and ensuring that everyone has access to the tools they need to achieve their financial goals. This course demystifies everyday finance, breaking down complex topics and equipping individuals with the knowledge and confidence to manage their money.”

The course is part of Mastercard’s broader strategy to promote inclusive financial services. Research shows that people who engage with financial education programs tend to improve their financial knowledge, make better financial decisions, and adopt positive financial behaviours.

In addition to offering the course to the general public, Mastercard Academy provides on-demand and instructor-led training for over 200 professionals across Mastercard’s global network.

This platform is designed not only to support Mastercard’s customers and partners but also to empower the general public with the skills and insights necessary to thrive in the rapidly evolving world of digital payments and financial management.

By providing free access to this valuable financial literacy resource, Mastercard is taking a significant step towards empowering individuals, particularly in underserved and developing regions, to make informed financial decisions and take control of their financial futures.
