In a landmark achievement in Ghana’s December 7, 2024, general elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made history in the Greater Accra Region by capturing 31 parliamentary seats. This extraordinary accomplishment, spearheaded by the regional chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Nii Ashie-Moore, marks a significant milestone for the NDC and highlights the effectiveness of his leadership and strategy.
A Remarkable Journey to Victory
When Ashie-Moore assumed the role of Greater Accra Regional Chairman in 2022, the NDC held 20 out of the 34 seats in the region. Setting an ambitious target to increase this number to 25 by 2024, his team exceeded expectations, adding 11 seats to achieve a total of 31. This represents the highest parliamentary seat count ever attained by the NDC in the region since the inception of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Speaking to ExpressNewsGhana, Ashie-Moore expressed his joy at the outcome:
“In 2020, we had 20 seats. Our target for 2024 was 25, but now we have added more, securing 31 seats.”
The Strategy Behind the Success
The unprecedented victory was attributed to a well-executed campaign strategy that focused on grassroots mobilization. Dubbed a “top to bottom” approach, the campaign engaged voters through door-to-door interactions, street-level engagements, and strategic outreach at traffic lights and bus stops.
Ashie-Moore highlighted the distinctiveness of this method compared to the opposition’s reliance on billboards and large events:
“We focused on connecting directly with the people. It was about listening to their concerns and addressing them face-to-face.”
The NDC’s 24-hour economic policy, championed by flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, also resonated with voters. The policy, which promised to revitalize the country’s industrial and economic hubs, struck a chord with residents in Greater Accra, home to the majority of Ghana’s government institutions and industries.
Navigating Challenges
Despite legal challenges from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over some of the newly won seats, the NDC remains confident in the legitimacy of their victories. Ashie-Moore assured supporters that all seats were duly declared by the Electoral Commission.
The NDC’s triumph includes high-profile wins in constituencies such as Ayawaso West Wuogon, Dome-Kwabenya, Adenta, Tema East, and Korle Klottey.
This historic win cements the NDC’s influence in Greater Accra and sets a strong foundation for future electoral contests. For Ashie-Moore, it is a testament to the power of strategic leadership and grassroots involvement.
“Greater Accra has spoken, and the people have chosen progress and a better future with the NDC,” Ashie-Moore declared.
As the dust settles on the elections, this victory positions the NDC as a formidable force, not just in Greater Accra, but across the nation.
