Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Ghana’s new Inspector-General of Police, brings over 40 years of leadership and law enforcement experience to the role.
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), ushering in a seasoned law enforcement leader with over 40 years of dedicated service to Ghana’s security landscape.
COP Yohuno, until his appointment, served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police, where he was instrumental in shaping the operational and strategic direction of the Ghana Police Service. His remarkable career, which began in 1985 as a police recruit, is a testament to decades of commitment, leadership, and strategic acumen.
A career rooted in leadership and innovation
Rising steadily through the ranks, Yohuno has held key leadership positions, including six Director-General roles overseeing vital portfolios such as Administration, Special Duties, Motor Traffic and Transport, Intelligence, Special Operations, and General Operations. His leadership on the Police Management Board influenced national policies and operational strategies, positioning him as a transformative figure within the service.
As Greater Accra Regional and Deputy Regional Commander, Yohuno was responsible for coordinating security efforts across Ghana’s busiest region — earning praise for his proactive crime prevention and resource management.
Notably, he was the first Director-General of the Police Intelligence Directorate, where he developed an intelligence framework that helped solve high-profile crimes, including the Kwabenya Police Station attack and the murder of a Lebanese national in Tema. His creation of the “Informant Reward System” significantly bolstered community-police collaboration.
International exposure and crisis management
Beyond Ghana, COP Yohuno contributed to global peace and security through two United Nations peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and East Timor — experiences that have enriched his approach to modern policing.
Back home, his expertise was crucial in securing major national events, including the 2016 General Elections and ECOWAS summits, where he demonstrated calm and strategic leadership.
Academic excellence meets professional distinction
A lifelong learner, Yohuno holds an Executive MBA in Project Management, a Bachelor of Science in Administration (HRM) from the University of Ghana, and an Intermediate Chartered Accountant certification. These academic achievements have complemented his operational roles, enhancing his strategic thinking and organizational management.
His efforts in fighting crime have earned him notable accolades, including the Best Recruit award in 1986 and a State Honour of Grand Medal in 2011 for combating armed robbery.
As Ghana’s IGP, Yohuno is expected to lead efforts to modernize and reform the Ghana Police Service, focusing on public trust, security innovation, and crime prevention. His career is guided by mentorship from former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye, and other distinguished leaders.
Away from duty, Christian Tetteh Yohuno is a family man who enjoys reading, athletics, football, and music—interests that keep him balanced and connected to society.
His appointment signals a new era for the Ghana Police Service, with expectations of greater professionalism, accountability, and public service dedication.
