In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) has launched a breast screening awareness programme at Haatso, drawing hundreds of women to participate.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GFZA, Ambassador Mike Oquaye Jnr, speaking at the event, emphasised the importance of addressing this critical health issue affecting Ghanaian women.
According to him, “Breast cancer is a dreadful ailment that affects our community, our sisters, daughters, mothers, and loved ones.”
He added, “As leaders, we must promote awareness, support, and reduce its alarming effects.”
He explained that Ghana’s breast cancer statistics are staggering, stating that one in eight women develop breast cancer in their lifetime, over 4,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, and many cases are detected at advanced stages, reducing survival rates.
GFZA’s Commitment
To combat these statistics, GFZA advocates for regular screenings and check-ups, education on self-examination techniques, and early detection and treatment.
Over the past two years, GFZA has screened over 5,000 people in various communities, partnering with local organisations for awareness campaigns.
Breaking the Stigma
Mr. Oquaye Jnr emphasised the need for collective action to break the stigma surrounding breast cancer and create more awareness.
“Together, we can save lives, empower women, and build a healthier Ghana,” he added.
GFZA’s breast cancer awareness campaign, themed, “Get Your Pink On”, also included staff-led awareness walks through Haatso and its environments.
This initiative demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to promoting health and wellness in Ghana.
