In honour of former First Lady Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, who passed away on October 1, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ordered that all national flags fly at half-staff from Monday, October 2, 2023, to Sunday, October 8, 2023.
In a statement released on Monday, the minister of information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, emphasized that Mrs. Kufuor had led a life marked by kindness, steadfast commitment, and selfless service to the people of Ghana.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to President J.A. Kufuor and the family as we collectively mourn the loss of a remarkable woman who touched the hearts of many,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has also commiserated with the former first family.
In a statement, Dr. Bawumia said “Samira and I are deeply pained by the death of a woman we all considered a major light in our personal and national lives”.
“I extend my condolences to President Kufuor, his immediate family, and the nation at large.”
The Minority in Parliament and its Party, the NDC, will today, October 3, have the chance to embark on their earlier announced #OccupyBOGProtest.
The group had faced court restrictions initiated by the police, who had disapproved of some routes to be used by the protestors, citing security concerns.
Among the routes that were selected by the opposition were the premises of the Bank of Ghana headquarters, a decision the police had vehemently opposed and which led to the demonstrations being postponed from September 5 to today.
The NDC have for the past days been engaging stakeholders in some communities to enlist their support for the demonstration.
The Minority, in a press conference on August 8, accused the Bank of Ghana of mismanagement on the back of a GHC 60.8 billion loss posted by the bank in its 2022 financial statements.
The BOG was also criticized for recklessly advancing funds to the government beyond the limits set out by the Public Financial Management Act.
Although the Central Bank had explained in a press statement that the losses were a result of the government’s DDEP program and the absorption of “haircuts”, the Minority would have none of that.
The BOG has also come under intense public bashing for allocating some $250 million for the construction of its new headquarters in Accra.
The demonstrators have, among other demands, urged the Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies to resign from their respective position
