In a proactive move to bolster cybersecurity awareness, MTN Ghana hosted media professionals on October 28, 2024, at its Ridge headquarters, spotlighting practical ways to secure personal data in daily digital interactions. Held under the theme “Living with Security” as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the event underscored MTN’s efforts to create a security-first culture among the public.
Led by MTN’s Chief Information Officer, Mr. Bernard Acquah, with moderation by tech expert Mr. Koby Spiky Nkrumah, the session focused on essential, everyday cybersecurity steps. Mr. Acquah shared accessible guidance on preventing data breaches, urging attendees to adopt simple habits such as turning off WiFi and Bluetooth when not in use, regularly updating devices, and steering clear of suspicious notifications. “In today’s digital age, a few smart habits can make a significant difference,” he emphasized.
One of the highlights was Mr. Acquah’s advice for safeguarding personal identity online, including avoiding oversharing ID information and being cautious of fraudulent offers. “Remember, you won’t win a contest you never entered,” he warned, reinforcing the need to question unsolicited messages that claim winnings or prizes.
The session also took a deep dive into family safety, with Mr. Acquah encouraging parents to be involved in their children’s online activities, fostering an early understanding of cybersecurity risks. Both speakers emphasized using AI wisely, as a means for learning and growth rather than exploitation.
An MTN banner at the event reading, “Don’t let your smart device outsmart you,” captured the spirit of the day, with Mr. Nkrumah reminding participants that treating personal devices with care and vigilance is essential for personal safety.
This initiative is part of MTN’s ongoing efforts to support a secure digital community by equipping the media, a critical bridge to the public, with practical cybersecurity knowledge. Through events like this, MTN Ghana aims to spread the message that safe digital practices are a fundamental part of modern life.
