MTN hires outgoing CEO of South African telecoms regulator

MTN Group has announced it is appointing the outgoing CEO of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), Willington Ngwepe, as chief of staff in the office of group CEO Ralph Mupita.

Ngwepe is due to step down as ICASA CEO on October 15, 2022, after five years in the role and, after serving for three years as Chief Operating Officer of ICASA.

But now, his departure from the industry regulator has been shifted forward to August ending, based on a mutual agreement between him and ICASA.

In a statement on its websites, MTN Group President and CEO, Ralph Mupita said “Willington brings with him extensive leadership, technology and regulatory experience that will be invaluable as we execute on our strategic intent of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress.”

Ralph Mupita said “We welcome him to the MTN Group, where his focus will be on providing advisory, strategic and operational support on specific matters driven directly from the group CEO office.”

Willington Ngwepe has a LLB and LLM (Communication Law) from the University of the Witwatersrand, and an LLM (Tax Law) from the University of South Africa.
