Accra will host the first-ever National Livestock Day from October 3-4, featuring a dynamic food bazaar and a range of activities at Efua Sutherland Park.
Under the theme “A Thriving Livestock Industry Towards Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security for Economic Growth,” the event will be organized by the Ghana National Association of Cattle Farmers (GNACAF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Ministry of National Security.
The celebration will spotlight Ghana’s finest livestock products, and offer exhibitions, panel discussions, and cultural displays.
The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of Livestock, Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru, who launched the event, highlighted the critical role the livestock industry plays in supporting rural livelihoods.
He acknowledged ongoing challenges in the sector, such as disease management, access to quality feed, and inadequate infrastructure, while also noting the government’s commitment to addressing these issues through partnerships with key stakeholders. Tufeiru emphasized that such collaborations, especially with the Ministry of National Security, have helped ease tensions between farmers and herders.
In addition, Mr.Tufeiru stressed the importance of promoting semi-intensive and intensive livestock farming systems to increase productivity while conserving natural resources.
GNACAF President, Imam Hanafi Sonde, called on businesses, organizations, and individuals to support the event. He pointed out that the day would provide a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge and addressing key challenges in the livestock sector, including farmer-herder conflicts and animal health issues. Mr.Sonde also encouraged sponsors to engage, noting that tailored sponsorship solutions are available to meet specific needs.
The Acting Deputy Director of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Doris Yaa Osei, assured the government’s continued dedication to working with all stakeholders to achieve food and nutrition security. She further noted that sustainable livestock production could massively enhance incomes, contributing to national economic growth.
The National Livestock Day is aimed at elevating Ghana’s livestock industry, with the broader goal of lifting farmers out of poverty and positioning the country as a competitive player in the global livestock market.
