The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what it calls a desperate attempt to shield Ato Forson, Minority Leader in Parliament and former Deputy Minister of Finance, from being held accountable for authorizing payments that resulted in a loss of 3.27 million Euros to the state. This accusation was made during a press conference addressed by the NPP on 28th May, 2024.
The NPP highlighted the facts surrounding the case, detailing how Ato Forson authorized payments for the purchase of ambulances in a manner that was contrary to the approved financing arrangement and parliamentary approval. The NPP pointed out that investigations into the matter began in 2017 and that the prosecution of Ato Forson was based on evidence gathered from various agencies involved in the transaction.
The NPP also addressed the proceedings before the High Court, where Ato Forson was ordered to open his defense after a submission of no case was rejected. The party accused the NDC of putting pressure on the Attorney General to discontinue the prosecution, citing threats from former President Mahama and the Minority in Parliament.
The NPP dismissed the allegations made by the 3rd accused, Richard Jakpa, that the Attorney General had coerced him to testify against Ato Forson. The party refuted the claims, stating that the Attorney General had never approached Jakpa for such a conversation. The NPP emphasized the successful record of the Attorney General and his commitment to prosecuting public officials responsible for financial losses to the state.
In conclusion, the NPP called out the NDC for its attempts to obstruct the course of justice and urged them to have faith in the judicial system. The party affirmed its support for the Attorney General and his determination to see the prosecution of Ato Forson through to conclusion.
