NDC must be happy over retention of NPP executives who failed in 2020 polls – Asah-Asante

“These same executives sold five of their seats out of the eleven they had to us in 2020 which gave us 6 seats. This is a return match.”

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) must be happy at the moment given that some of the executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the regions who were unable to put up any extraordinary performance in the 2020 polls for their party were retained, a Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has said.

In his view, although the NDC must be happy, they have a lot of work to do ahead of the 2024 general elections if they are to win.

Speaking on the just-ended internal polls of the NPP, on TV3’s New Day with Berla Mundi, Tuesday May 31, Dr Asah-Asante said “For the opposition they will be happy that you have retained the people who contributed nothing in the last elections. They must be happy that they have been retained but they have a lot of work to do.”

It is recalled that following the elections, the Bono Regional Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Efo Worlanyo Tsekpo joyfully reacted to the victory of the Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC) who was retained as Regional Chair.

He believed that Abronye’s victory would make the work easier for the NDC in the region.

Abronye DC beat his closest contender Rasheed Kolanbiig by almost a 100 votes to emerge winner in the NPP internal election on Sunday May 29.

Reacting to this in a statement, Efo Worlanyo Tsekpo said “This is a dream come true, Abronye as a Chairman and Razak as Youth Organizer? Comrades we are good to go in the Bono Region.

“Congratulations to them, They will go into History as executives who led their party into opposition.

“These same executives sold five of their seats out of the eleven they had to us in 2020 which gave us 6 seats. This is a return match.”

The Ashanti Region Chairman of the NDC Augustus Nana Akwasi also said Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s retention as New Patriotic Party’s regional chairman is a good omen for the NDC.

He stated that Chairman Wontumi’s win is good for the NDC in the Ashanti Region because the opposition party will increase its vote in 2024.

“In the 2020 election, the NDC secured over 26 percent, better than 2016 when the party had 23 percent.

“Wontumi bragged that he would conquer all 47 seats in the [Ashanti] Region but what happened at the end of the day, the NDC took four and also ensured that the NPP dropped from 76 to 71 percent.”

He said Wontumi’s re-election is a welcoming news.

“We congratulate him for winning; now everything shows that NDC under John Dramani Mahama is coming back to save Ghanaians from severe hardship,” he said.
