It appears the bloodlettings that characterises elections in the country have come earlier than anticipated, following the fierce clash between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters last Saturday at the Asunafo South constituency in the Ahafo Region.
Our scouts say that last Saturday, 7 September, this year, Dr. Mustapha Abdul Hamid, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), took his campaign tour to the Asunafo South Constituency.
After addressing Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kukuom with our parliamentary candidate, Frank Aduse Poku, he proceeded to Kwapong to meet the Chief and elders and climax his activities with a mini rally at Kwapong Nursing School.
While there, Frimpong Andrews, Ahafo Regional Communications Director, a “group of NDC members led by their Constituency Youth Organiser, one Akilibona, recklessly rode motorbikes and a Mercedes Sprinter van through the rally crowds of the NPP without any provocation, seeking to create chaos. Despite those undemocratic behaviours, the NPP members remained calm.”
The situation, he narrated in a press release, escalated when the NDC Youth Organiser, tried to unfurl NPP banners at the rally grounds. After multiple warnings, Akiliboobo and his group turned violent, pelting stones and injuring one NPP member.
“These NDC hooligans after a resistance from the NPP Youth fled to the residence of one Gyau, a former NDC Constituency chairman. In a reckless act, Mr. Gyau fired a gun at the NPP members who were trying to address the situation; injuring one person in the process.,” the Ahafo Regional Communications Director stated.
He alleged the violent clash was consistent with what he alleged to be the violent tactics of the NDC parliamentary candidate, and his appendages, whose party has a history of violent disruptions in the Asunafo South constituency.
Hitherto this unfortunate event, Mr. Frempong said, recently, during a voters registration Exercise at Kukuom, the violent king sent some known NDC gunmen to shoot over 77 rounds to disrupt the process, injuring people during the voter registration exercise at Kukuom, leaving some severely injured.
It should be noted therefore that, one Mr Red, NDC constituency organizer for Asunafo South has been issuing series of phone call threats to the District Director and other workers of the electoral commission to in an attempt to force them to do his master’s bidding with impunity.
The NDC declined to comment on the incident when The Inquirer reached out to them.
Meanwhile, the NPP is imploring the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Peace Council and all other relevant stakeholders to call the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South to order before it is too late.
