The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is urging residents in parts of the Volta region who were victims of the Akosombo and Kpong dams spillage, to take advantage of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise to replace their lost voter ID cards in order to be able to exercise their franchise in the upcoming general elections in December.
A release on Friday, May 24, signed by the party’s Volta regional communications officer, Kafui Agbleze stated: “The NDC in the Volta region expresses our deepest sympathies to all citizens affected by the devastating flood disaster caused by spillages from the opening of the floodgates of Akosombo and Kpong Dams in September 2023 by the Volta River Authority (VRA), seriously affecting some 39,000 Ghanaians downstream.
We recognize the devastating impact this act has had on lives, properties, and livelihoods across our beloved region.”
The release added: “In light of this, we are urging all flood victims who have lost their voter ID cards to actively partake in the processes of having them replaced. The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured that the replacements will be done free of charge for all flood victims.
This initiative is crucial to ensure that all eligible voters retain their ability to participate in the December 7 and future electoral processes without hindrance.”
It further encouraged all affected individuals to visit the nearest EC offices in their respective districts from 30th May to 14th June 2024 to have their lost voter ID cards replaced.
“This also applies to those who may want to transfer their votes or apply to vote by proxy,” it said.
The release indicated that the NDC was committed to supporting this process and will provide any necessary assistance to facilitate a smooth and efficient replacement procedure, adding that every citizen’s right to vote was fundamental and inalienable, and “we stand with them to ensure that this right is preserved despite the challenges posed by the unfortunate flood disaster.”
“The NDC remains dedicated to advocating for and assisting the people of the Volta region in every possible way to join in the pursuit of democratically ousting the current clueless, reckless and super-incompetent Nana Addo-Bawumia led NPP government,’ the release said.
