Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, has clinched victory in the Dome Kwabenya constituency, dismantling the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) longstanding dominance in the area.
The results, declared late Sunday night, revealed a razor-thin margin, with Mrs Akurugu securing 51,634 votes against the 50,477 garnered by Mike Oquaye Jr., the NPP candidate.
This landmark win represents the first time the NDC has captured the Dome Kwabenya seat, a constituency historically regarded as an NPP fortress.
Mrs Akurugu’s victory signals a shift in voter sentiment in a region pivotal to the NPP’s parliamentary strength.
The loss in Dome Kwabenya was part of a broader trend of setbacks for the NPP, as the party also conceded other key constituencies to the NDC, including Adansi Asokwa, Sekondi, and several others.
These defeats underscore significant shifts in Ghana’s political landscape.
