We need to make it impossible for students to cheat – Dr. Osei Adutwum

Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has tasked the relevant authorities and stakeholders to make it impossible for students in Ghana to cheat during examinations.

He said cheating defeats the purpose of attitudinal change that will bring about the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda of the current government.

“If we allow cheating to take place in our schools we cannot produce the caliber of people to take Ghana beyond aid. If you can cheat, teachers won’t have to teach. During the exams, they will help you. That is why on the last exams students went on a rampage because they were expecting certain questions to come,” the minister said.

According to him, he believes that WAEC needs to look at the best practices done around the world and apply some of them when conducting exams.

He said this while addressing some students during a student engagement forum on the vision of “Ghana Beyond Aid” organized by the Ghana Beyond Aid Committee in collaboration with the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

Dr. Adutwum added that students in Ghana have been socialised to think that whatever the teachers say is final and students cannot contribute in the teaching and learning process.

“I have visited some schools where after I addressed the students when I ask the students ‘do you have any questions for me’, nobody raised their hands.” He added that “they’ve been socialised to think that when the teachers talk they have to take notes so at the time of the exams you give it back to the teacher.”

He said that students are not willing to be assertive and communicate their ideas to their teachers hence the need to develop the hidden curriculum to help students bring their suggestions into the teaching and learning process.
