The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has extended its deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his pivotal role in uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), a decision poised to enhance healthcare accessibility across Ghana.
During the budget presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson officially announced the uncapping of the NHIF. He stated: “Mr. Speaker, we have uncapped the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL). An amount of GH₵9.93 billion has been programmed for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for: claim payments; essential medicines; vaccines payments; the Free Primary Healthcare; the Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares); and bridging of the USAID financing shortfall.”
In a statement dated the same day, NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe hailed the decision as a significant policy achievement, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable and accessible healthcare for all citizens.
The uncapping of the NHIF is expected to channel more financial resources into strengthening healthcare services, broadening coverage, and enhancing the efficiency of the NHIS.
This measure not only delivers on a major campaign pledge but also underscores the administration’s unwavering dedication to healthcare reform and improved medical services for Ghanaians.
