Northern Region: Angry NDC supporters demand release of Vice Chairman, lock party office in protest

“It is something that the party constitution frowns on. And since we have received the full briefing on the matter, we will certainly take action whether or not the accused has reported himself to the police.

Scores of National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region are rallying for the immediate release of the party’s First Vice Chairman, Alhaji Abdul Hamid, affectionately known as Alhaji Gbewaa.

The senior party figure was apprehended by the Northern Regional Police Command on charges of allegedly assaulting Hajia Shemima Yakubu, the NDC’s northern regional treasurer.

In a show of solidarity, the dissatisfied group, adorned with red armbands, gathered at the NDC northern regional secretariat, where they not only vociferously chanted and drummed but also locked up the party office.

After the protest, some of the impassioned youth addressed the media, articulating their grievances and pressing for the immediate release of Alhaji Gbewaa.

“We have seen a series of misunderstandings before”, one of the protesters said. “But we have never seen situations where a chairman has been arrested”.

“This is not the first time Shamima has been causing problems in the party…We have other female executives, but I don’t understand why she is causing trouble for us. So, we are sending a signal to the national executives not to cause any sanctions or suspend Alhaji Gbewaa”.

“If that happens then Tamale, we will show them that Tamale belongs to us the youth”, another warned.

The situation further escalates the deep-seated tensions within the party with many questioning the action taken by the national leadership to stem the tide.

In an interview, a Deputy General Secretary of the NDC Mustapha Gbande says the party will look into the matter in the interest of peace.

“It is something that the party constitution frowns on. And since we have received the full briefing on the matter, we will certainly take action whether or not the accused has reported himself to the police. Meanwhile, we condemn such unguided act on a colleague executive”, Gbande told Accra-based JoyFM.
