Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akatsi North constituency, Hon. Peter Nortsu Kotoe, has been selected as the new Chairman of the Education Select Committee of Parliament. He previously served as the Ranking Member of the Committee while in opposition.
MP for Kintampo North, Hon. Joseph Kumah, has also been elevated to the position of Vice Chairman. Prior to this, he was a member of the Committee during his time in opposition.
The Committee has played a crucial role in strengthening parliamentary oversight on the Ministry of Education and its agencies.
A key education advocate, Kofi Asare, highlighted in a Facebook post on Saturday, that he and his team have worked closely with Hon. Nortsu Kotoe, his deputy Ranking Member, Hon. Clement Apaak, and Hon. Kumah to ensure accountability and policy influence.
Additionally, former Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has been made the new Ranking Member on the Committee. His experience as a former minister is expected to enhance the Committee’s work. Asare noted that while Adutwum was Minister, they maintained a smooth working relationship built on mutual respect and an appreciation of diverse opinions.
Asare also drew parallels between Hon. Adutwum’s new role and that of Hon. Dominic Fobih, who served as Ranking Member in 2009 after being Minister for Education under President John Agyekum Kufuor. He emphasized the evolving nature of leadership roles in a democracy, stating, “Apart from Civil Society, no role is permanent in a democracy. One script; different actors.”
He extended his congratulations and best wishes to the new leadership, expressing hope for continued collaboration to strengthen legislative oversight, influence education policies, and ensure accountability in the education sector.
