Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as unparalleled in Ghana’s history.
Speaking at the 2024 Manifesto launch, the Effutu MP stated that no other president in Ghana’s history has faced the challenges Akufo-Addo has endured, particularly with the level of calmness and focus the nation has witnessed under his leadership.
“Having a split parliament with a Speaker from the opposition, while managing such severe global economic crises—no president in the history of Ghana has had to face these challenges like Akufo-Addo has. Yet, he has led with unprecedented calmness and focus. Nana, we thank you!” he said.
The Majority Leader questioned how Ghana would have navigated these crises—including the financial sector crisis, COVID-19 pandemic, Russian-Ukraine war, global cost of living crisis, a split parliament, and an opposition Speaker—if former President John Mahama had been in charge.
“How would John Mahama have handled these multiple crises if we had the misfortune of him being our leader? Remember, he created his own crisis just three years after we discovered oil, leading us to the IMF even when the global economy was stable, with no pandemic in sight. Please, don’t send Ghana back to the operators of ‘dumsor,’” he urged.
The Effutu legislator highlighted that his government has achieved more in the past eight years than any other administration in the history of the Fourth Republic. He pointed out significant accomplishments in infrastructure, education, health, national security, agriculture, and energy.
“We have done more for national security—whether in recruitment or logistics for the police, military, immigration, and fire services—than any other government. We have empowered farmers more than any previous administration. We have built more railways and kept the lights on better than the NDC ever did,” he emphasized.
He called on Ghanaians to remember the state of the nation under the John Mahama administration, assuring them that the NPP has weathered the storm, stabilized the economy, and created a stronger foundation for the next government to deliver on what matters most to Ghanaians: jobs.
“This stability, this reliability, is what responsible governance looks like. Also, remember the state of our nation under John Mahama’s leadership. Chronic power outages crippled businesses and households alike. ‘Dumsor’ wasn’t just a word; it was a national crisis. Have you forgotten that barbers, hairdressers, cold store operators, and others could barely keep their businesses open, working only to cover the cost of fueling generators? Hotels had to turn customers away because they couldn’t afford to keep the generators running. Our new oil-rich economy was on life support, requiring an IMF bailout. Unemployment soared, particularly among our youth, giving rise to the Association of Unemployed Youth. Instead of buying tractors for districts to fix our roads, Mahama preferred to buy small cars for young, energetic women! And this isn’t just my opinion—it’s based on their own uncontested testimonies!” he asserted.
“Anaa me boa? Corruption scandals made headlines with alarming regularity. And this was a leader still hoping for a second term! Just think about that for a moment. He expected to be voted in again. But did he care about you then? No! Would he care if given another chance this December for another four years?” he questioned.
