The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated the nomination process for the Manhyia South constituency following Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s elevation to the party’s vice-presidential candidate position for the upcoming elections.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s move has left the parliamentary seat for Manhyia South vacant, pending official declaration by Parliament.

Ensuring transparency, the party has assured a fair and equitable electoral process while urging prospective candidates to maintain decorum, emphasizing that this is an internal party affair.

Danquah Smith Buttey, the NPP’s first National Vice Chairman for the region, confirmed the commencement of nominations in an interview with Citi News. He outlined that candidates interested in contesting must file with an amount of GH¢35,000. However, special considerations apply, with females, youth under 40, and physically disabled persons required to pay GH¢17,500.

“We have opened nominations today and will close them tomorrow. Vetting will occur on Wednesday, and the election is scheduled for Sunday. Any grievances can be brought to the constituency office by Saturday, which will be forwarded to our regional headquarters in Accra,” he stated.

Following Dr Opoku Prempeh’s confirmation as the vice-presidential candidate on July 5, posters endorsing Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, the Manhyia South Constituency Treasurer and brother of NAPO, have surfaced, signalling his intent to contest for the parliamentary seat.

Sources from Channel One News have revealed that other potential candidates have also begun engaging with delegates privately, indicating a competitive race in the offing. Four individuals have picked up nomination forms.

The upcoming election in Manhyia South promises to be a closely watched affair within the NPP, with candidates positioning themselves to secure the party’s nod for the vacant parliamentary seat.
