NPP gov’t is a monumental failure – Minority Leader

Speaking at the launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto in Winneba on Saturday, he lamented that the country lost its status as the second-largest economy in West Africa to Côte d’Ivoire in 2022.

Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, labelling its administration a “monumental failure.”

He accused the NPP of mismanaging the economy, destroying livelihoods, and reversing Ghana’s progress and pointed to Ghana’s declining economic position.

Speaking at the launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto in Winneba on Saturday, he lamented that the country lost its status as the second-largest economy in West Africa to Côte d’Ivoire in 2022.

Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), he said, was $72 billion, while Côte d’Ivoire’s GDP surpassed it at $75 billion.

“Since independence, this is the first time Côte d’Ivoire has overtaken us in terms of GDP size. This situation is projected to worsen by the end of this year, with Côte d’Ivoire’s GDP expected to reach $89 billion, compared to Ghana’s projected $75 billion,” Forson lamented.

Dr. Forson announced that the next NDC government will implement a $10 billion ‘Big Push’ initiative aimed at driving economic growth and transformation and reversing this trend.

This program, he said, would focus on attracting investments and fostering the necessary reforms to restore Ghana’s economic standing.

The Minority leader also accused the NPP government of collapsing the cocoa sector, wasting public funds, and undermining good governance.

He claimed that the current administration has caused significant harm to the nation, including implementing ‘crude and painful haircuts’ across various sectors, which has eroded public trust.

“They have destroyed our livelihoods and driven the economy aground. They have corrupted the moral fabric of our country and implemented the ‘Agyapadie’ state capture agenda,” Ato Forson charged and called on Ghanaians to unite and support the NDC in resetting the nation’s course.
