Rodney Nkrumah Boateng, Press Secretary to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has dismissed assertions that the selection of the Energy Minister as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was solely influenced by ethnic factors.
Amid speculation that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) strategically chose a running mate from the Ashanti Region to bolster support in its stronghold, Nkrumah Boateng acknowledged the electoral advantages but emphasised that NAPO’s credentials and potential were pivotal in his selection.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Point of View with Bernard Avle, Nkrumah Boateng stated, “I wish I were a fly on the wall to know all of these matters. I do not know. It will make sense electorally to have someone from the party’s base to help galvanise the base, to help energise the base. But I do not think it was the only factor that saw him [through].”
He further highlighted NAPO’s leadership qualities and natural charisma as factors that set him apart, suggesting these qualities were instrumental in the decision-making process.
“While selecting a candidate from the Ashanti Region aligns with strategic electoral considerations, attributing his candidacy solely to ethnicity overlooks NAPO’s broader appeal and leadership qualities,” Nkrumah Boateng added.
NAPO, known for his magnetic personality and ability to inspire others, brings a wealth of experience and vision to the role, positioning him as a capable partner to Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections.
