The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on the Government to immediately address the cause of delay of the student’s Trust Loan because it is destroying the hope students and education in the tertiary sector.
According to NUGS, present and past government have failed to address the issues surrounding the delay of the loan and so it is affecting the conditions of students in the various campuses.
The President of NUGS, Isaac Jay Hyde, revealed this at a press conference in Accra to announce their displeasure at the way government is handling the student’s loan scheme.
He called on the government to release the Ghs10 million cheque, for disbursement to beneficiaries by next week as promised because it is destroying the hopes of students in the tertiary education sector.
“But I wish to impress on government to keep to its word while the Students Loan Fund also does it’s part for our brothers and sisters loans to be paid starting Monday, as promised,” he said.
“We want to tell the government and the SLFT that we are tired of being starved through loans and scholarships. We are tired of how they are treating education in this country,” he bemoaned.
Isaac Hyde added that the act of politicizing education have nothing good to offer but destruction, adding that, “If any government cannot deliver on social intervention like loans, then its not worth celebrating for any other social intervention because they may be at the tertiary level”
Meanwhile, NUGS has also extended its solidarity and support to students living abroad, especially China, on the outbreaks of Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease being recorded globally.
“We have met with government and the ministry of foreign affairs a couple of times to assess the chances of evacuation. But from all indications and from medical and technical advise, our seemingly poor containment emergency health system as a country, could fail us and invite doom onto us, should we go the way of countries like Qatar. Though I wished my brother could come home”, he said.
But NUGS promised to continue monitor government’s decision to provide an atmosphere of comfort, healthy and nutritious living for students in China. The Chinese Embassy in Ghana have also given their word of utmost security for students! living in China.
