The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has given the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) a one-week ultimatum to release all withheld 2024 WASSCE results or face nationwide protests.
In a strongly worded statement, NUGS also called for the immediate resignation of WAEC Ghana’s Head, citing what it describes as the unfair and unlawful treatment of candidates accused of examination malpractice.
The student body expressed concerns over WAEC’s refusal to grant affected students a fair hearing before canceling their results. NUGS further accused the examination body of deliberately delaying the release of results until after university admission deadlines, allegedly to prevent students from securing placements in public universities.
Additionally, the Union criticized WAEC’s practice of canceling entire results for students found guilty of malpractice in a single subject. NUGS argues that only the affected paper should be canceled, not the student’s entire results.
On January 2, 2025, NUGS formally wrote to WAEC, demanding explanations for these actions. However, the letter has reportedly gone unanswered.
At a press conference, NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway warned that if their demands were not met, they would mobilize students for mass demonstrations across the country. He also called for urgent institutional reforms within WAEC to prevent what he described as injustices against students.
“Education is a fundamental right, and WAEC must uphold justice, fairness, and accountability. The credibility of WAEC is at stake if students and the general public lose confidence in its fairness,” he stated.
He further warned that if WAEC failed to act, NUGS would escalate the matter through legal and advocacy channels, including seeking judicial intervention.
“We demand immediate reforms to address these injustices. If WAEC fails to act, we will not hesitate to pursue legal action,” Daniel added.
He concluded by urging all affected students to remain calm but resolute in demanding their rights.
“NUGS stands with every student affected by WAEC’s actions, and we will not rest until justice is served,” he assured.
