The New Patriotic Party (NPP) which is noted for intellectualism is drifting into a mode that is quite dangerous for the forward move of the party.
In the past, there were nothing like power players in the party, rather persons who could make cases with sound arguments that would ensure the overall development of the NPP.
Today, things have changed so much that self-glorification and craving for clout to control affairs within the party have become the order of the day.
It is getting too ugly to the extent that anybody feels that his or her whims and caprices should be what will dictate how the party is run.
The Presidential Candidate of the party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia noted for decisiveness and uprightness is virtually in a tight corner because of the insipid desire of certain people to control.
What is surprising is that one of such characters is a semi-literate who cannot simply string words together to form simple sentences that an intelligent primary six pupil could do is the one who wants to dictate to Dr. Bawumia.
It has gotten to the point that Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Wontumi and his assigns on his various radio stations could tell the Presidential candidate what to do and what not to do.
Wontumi who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman and his assigns are in no small way forced to control the turf and feel that the Presidential Candidate should kowtow to them by consulting them before breathing.
It is undeniable that the Ashanti Region is the ‘World Bank’ of the NPP and whoever handles that region is a topmost stakeholder of the NPP, but Wontumi is causing more harm than good to the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
The Ashanti Region in the past had serious thinking Regional Chairmen in the likes of Messrs F.F. Antoh and Robert Amankwa, and they worked in a manner that brought total unity within the region.
At no point did Messrs Antoh and Amankwa force their way to have total control of the Presidential candidate and use their assigns to attack the leading members of the NPP.
They worked selflessly to hold NPP in the Ashanti Region and there was no way that Mr. Antoh or Mr. Amankwa would have used their radio stations to attack persons within the NPP if they had one at the time that they led the NPP in that region.
The NPP has an agenda to prosecute going into the 2024 elections and it is time to tell Wontumi and his assigns that are causing serious damage in the Ashanti region that enough is enough.
He must be told in the face that Dr. Bawumia can read, write and understand and therefore cannot foist his position on him; instead, he (Wontumi) and his assigns should channel their energies towards ensuring that all hands are on deck because now his actions and inactions are destroying the Ashanti Region NPP.
A reminder should be served that the NPP did not put up a spirited performance in the Ashanti Region in the 2020 elections all because of the manner Wontumi handled the affairs in the region and the same should not be repeated in 2024.
