Otto Addo: Ghana Was Lucky to Qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

In a recent interview with the Ghana FA media team, following a disappointing AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign, Addo shared his concerns about the team’s ongoing struggles.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo has candidly acknowledged that Ghana’s qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was more a matter of fortune than skill.

In a recent interview with the Ghana FA media team, following a disappointing AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign, Addo shared his concerns about the team’s ongoing struggles.

Reflecting on the decline since failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Addo noted, “If we look at the past few years, since we failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2018, we’ve been struggling as a football nation.”

Ghana narrowly secured their place in Qatar by overcoming Nigeria on away goals, with the aggregate score ending 1-1. Addo attributed this success to luck, stating, “We were lucky to qualify in 2022 with me as head coach.”

After returning for a second stint following a poor AFCON 2023 campaign, Addo initially led the team to two consecutive victories. However, the recent AFCON 2025 qualifiers have seen the Black Stars struggle, with two draws and two losses, placing them third in their group.

Addo remains hopeful, emphasizing the talent within the squad. “Anyone who has seen our home games against Nigeria, Angola, or Sudan knows the players have the talent,” he asserted. Ghana now faces crucial must-win matches in November to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
