Parliament has approved Herbert Krapa as Minister of State for the Ministry of Energy.
This comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presented his nomination to parliament on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
The Minority initially blocked a request by the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin to expedite his vetting and approval arguing that the incumbent Energy Minister, Mathew Opoku Prempeh was still at post.
On Wednesday, July 10, the Appointments Committee recommended his approval prompting the Minority to stage a walkout in disapproval.
However, the report was approved in their absence.
The president, in his nomination letter, said this was necessitated by the heavy workload at the Energy Ministry.
“I’m writing to seek parliamentary approval for the appointment of Honourable Herbert Krapa as Minister of State at the Minister of Energy in accordance with Article 78 of the Constitution. It has been the practice for some time for the Minister of Energy to be populated by a substantive minister and three deputy ministers.
“In view of the exceptionally heavy workload now attendant at the ministry, it has become necessary to appoint a Minister of State at the Ministry in the person of Honourable Herbert Krapah who is currently a deputy minister.I would be extremely grateful if Parliament acts expeditiously on this request to enable a full complement of the ministers and deputy ministers to undertake their important functions as soon as possible,” the letter read.
Mr Krapa was a Deputy Energy Minister before his nomination.
He is also the Board Chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Meanwhile, parliament also approved Kofi Ahenkora Marfo as Deputy Trade and Industry Minister.
