Parliament is set to take a decisive vote to determine the fate of the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy document when it reconvenes today, December 7, 2023.
The vote in the form of a headcount comes after the Minority in Parliament last week challenged the approval of the policy document.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, had initially declared the voice vote in favour of the Majority on Wednesday, November 29, after the conclusion of the budget debate.
However, this decision faced opposition from the Minority Caucus, prompting them to challenge the ruling and demand a headcount.
In response, the Majority group staged a walkout, setting the stage for a heightened political standoff.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, in the aftermath of the parliamentary drama, announced that the headcount vote would take place today, December 7. This critical vote will determine the approval of the economic policy and budget statement, paving the way for the approval of the budget estimates for the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
The various caucuses are expected to marshalling their numbers to the floor to help advance their respective causes.
