Eight Chinese nationals and a Ghanaian arrested over missing ECG containers at Tema Port. Cables linked to the consignment found at a Chinese-owned smelter in Shai Hills.

Operatives of the National Security have arrested eight Chinese nationals and a Ghanaian in connection with the disappearance of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Port.

The arrests come after cables believed to be part of the missing consignment were traced to an aluminum smelter owned by the Chinese at Shai Hills.

The latest crackdown follows an ongoing investigation into the missing ECG containers scandal, where over 1,300 containers filled with cables and essential electrical equipment were reported unaccounted for.

National Security operatives, acting on intelligence, swooped in on the smelting facility, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Jinapor earlier confirmed to TV3 on Thursday, March 27, that authorities had retrieved 40 of the missing containers at a terminal in Kpone. He disclosed that an Indian national had been taken into custody in connection with the case.

According to Minister Jinapor, the arrested Indian businessman claimed he had legally purchased the containers last year, but investigations are ongoing to verify his statement.

The information I got this morning is that already they have traced about 40 containers to a particular terminal or warehouse in Kpone, which belongs to an Indian national. They have confiscated all the 40 containers and moved them to a secured location,” the Minister stated.

The ECG container scandal has drawn national attention after an investigative committee, led by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, revealed that while ECG’s records showed 2,491 uncleared containers at Tema Port, an independent audit found only 1,134—leaving 1,347 missing.

Authorities have vowed to retrieve all missing containers and prosecute those responsible.
