The Ghana Police Service has issued a comprehensive statement clarifying the events surrounding the Democracy Hub protest, which took place from September 21-23, 2024.
The protest initially planned for the Revolutionary Square, was deemed a security risk and redirected to alternative venues.
Background of the Protest
The Democracy Hub, a pressure group advocating for good governance and accountability, had notified the Police of their intention to hold a protest.
The Police engaged with the conveners, agreeing on the date but advising against the chosen venue due to security concerns.
Court Involvement
In a statement, the Police said they took the matter to court, obtaining an order on September 18, 2024, prohibiting the Democracy Hub from using the Revolutionary Square.
Despite this, the organizers insisted on picketing at the location.
Unlawful Assembly
On September 21, 2024, protesters unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection, engaging in acts such as blocking roads, setting fires, harassing and attacking road users, and damaging property.
These actions caused extreme inconvenience to commuters, delayed access to medical facilities, and impacted commercial activities.
Police Response
The Police cautioned the organizers to relocate to one of the seven suggested venues, but they disregarded the warning.
During the arrest, Police demonstrated restraint, despite provocations.
Arrests and Detention
Fifty-four persons were arrested, including Grace Asantewaa, a 50-year-old woman wrongly reported as 68.
She was granted bail due to the presence of her child, who was provided with food.
The child accompanied Asantewaa to the Police Station.
Disputing False Claims
The Police disputed allegations of arresting a pregnant woman, Gloria Vera Louise. Medical examinations revealed she was not pregnant.
The Police urge the public to disregard false reports.
The Police noted that the Professional Standards Bureau will investigate instances of prolonged detention beyond 48 hours.
The Police assured their commitment to nurturing democratic freedoms and providing security for peaceful protests.
Reactions and Concerns
Meanwhile, critics argue that the Police response was heavy-handed, while others commend their restraint.
