The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, for introducing a directive barring police officers stationed at voting centers during the December 7 general elections from carrying firearms. The rule also extends to other personnel, including those from the Fire Service, Ambulance Service, and other supporting agencies.
Dr. Boamah, who heads the NDC delegation that recently met with the IGP, described the meeting as “very fruitful.” Speaking to the media after a follow-up engagement at the Police Headquarters, he emphasized the importance of ensuring peaceful, free, and fair elections.
“As we gear up for a peaceful and transparent election next month, I must commend the IGP and the election security task force for the measures they have put in place,” Dr. Boamah stated.
He praised the Ghana Police Service for its performance during the Assin North by-election, expressing confidence that similar measures, if replicated and enhanced, would ensure a peaceful and transparent general election.
“This development does not resolve all the challenges the NDC has with the Electoral Commission,” Dr. Boamah acknowledged. “However, it is reassuring to know that the security agencies are committed to ensuring no legal weapons will be present at polling stations,” he added.
He further noted that the IGP would act as the sole Commander-in-Chief of the Election Security Task Force, holding exclusive authority to authorize any military intervention. “This means the responsibility for any military involvement will rest entirely with him, as the military will remain a last resort for any critical interventions,” Dr. Boamah explained.
The NDC lauded this decision as a significant step toward fostering public trust and maintaining a peaceful electoral environment.
