The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called for the postponement of the 2024 voter’s exhibition exercise scheduled for August 20, 2024, to August 27, 2024.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ on August 19, 2024, Asiedu Nketiah suggested that the electoral commission should provide the political parties with the voter’s register for scrutiny.
Asiedu Nketiah explained that providing the voter’s register to the political parties would serve as a safeguard and help to eliminate any illegal names from the register to prevent potential chaos.
“We are calling on the Electoral Commission to postpone the exhibition exercise and rather ensure that the parties receive the voters register because that is what we will use to conduct the exhibition.
“If you haven’t given us a register and you announce for us to conduct the voters’ exhibition, how will we detect if there are any discrepancies once the exercise is over? It is just like blindsiding us,” he said.
According to him, peaceful elections can only be assured if the EC is transparent with both the political parties and the public.
“So we are calling on the electoral commission to provide and bring a register for us all to monitor the names and to also remove names of unqualified individuals that have been illegally entered into the register by some unscrupulous persons before the elections begin. That is what will bring peaceful elections,” he noted.
The Electoral Commission announced its intentions to conduct an exhibition exercise of the voter’s register on August 20, 2024, to August 27, 2024.
According to the EC, the exercise will allow registered voters to check for the accuracy of their details in the register and notify the EC of any errors ahead of the elections in December.
