Pre-tertiary Teachers Hint At Strike Resumption

The teachers are asking for a Continuous Professional Development Allowance, Deprived Area Allowance, Commuting Allowance, Rent or Housing Allowance, Reaching/Assessment allowance among others.

Pre-tertiary teachers are contemplating resuming their suspended strike action which began on March 20, 2024.

The industrial action was called off on April 2 after an interim court order was secured by the National Labour Commission (NMC) to compel the teachers to go back to the classroom and make way for the negotiations on their conditions of service.

Two weeks after returning to the classroom, the representatives of the teachers say, any meaningful agreement is yet to be achieved.

According to the teachers, the government has exhibited lackluster toward the negotiations.

“All this while, our negotiations have not achieved any meaning outcome. More disappointing is the fact that the Government team does not seem to have the requisite mandate to respond adequately to our demands.”

They thereby alluded to a return to the industrial action.

“We would to caution the general public and the government that in the event of any brouhaha, at Pre-tertiary level, teacher union leaders must not be blamed,” a statement issued by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-Gh) said on April15, 2024.
