President Nana Akufo-Addo has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Urology and Nephrology Center of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, a major step in advancing Ghana’s healthcare system. The newly commissioned facility on 18th October 2024 aims to enhance treatment for kidney and urinary conditions while positioning the country as a regional hub for medical services.
The center was built with a €38 million credit facility from Raiffeisen Bank International of Austria, backed by insurance cover from OEKB Group. This modern facility features 33 dialysis stations, a 70-bed unit, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services, and a research facility. Additionally, a two-year post-construction maintenance and training program has been established to ensure the sustainability of its services.
“This landmark project represents a considerable milestone in our nation’s journey to improve healthcare,” President Akufo-Addo stated, emphasizing that the government will repay the loan used to fund the construction. He called on Ghanaians to hold healthcare managers accountable for maintaining the facility to ensure its longevity.
The center is expected to provide advanced treatment options for patients with kidney diseases and other urological conditions, including life-saving services like kidney transplants. According to the president, this will fulfill Ghana’s objective of achieving universal health coverage and will also attract medical tourism from neighboring countries, generating additional revenue for the facility.
During his address, President Akufo-Addo highlighted other ongoing healthcare projects across the country, including the construction of 11 district hospitals and one polyclinic, as well as progress on the government’s Agenda 111 initiative aimed at building hospitals in underserved areas. He assured that 98 hospital sites are actively under construction, with several expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
From 2017 to August 2024, the administration has increased hospital bed capacity by 36%, adding 8,665 new beds to Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure. The president noted that these achievements contribute to the nation’s progress toward meeting the Sustainable Development Goals of reducing maternal and child mortality.
As the president commissioned the new center, he extended gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the project, including Raiffeisen Bank, OEKB Group, the contractors, consultants, and the Ministry of Health, among others.
The Urology and Nephrology Center of Excellence at Korle Bu is expected to revolutionize healthcare services in Ghana, setting a new standard for specialized medical care in the country.
