President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, March 6, 2025, embarked on a compassionate visit to the Volta Region, where tidal waves have recently devastated coastal communities, displacing hundreds of residents and destroying properties.
This visit comes on the heels of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration, where President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to national development and resilience against environmental challenges.
Leaving immediately after the Independence Day commemorative event, President Mahama is expected to engage with affected residents, assess the damage, and coordinate immediate relief efforts.
The tidal waves have caused widespread destruction, leaving hundreds homeless and damaging homes, fishing boats, and farmlands in communities such as Keta, Anloga, and Dzita. Residents have been calling for swift government intervention to alleviate their suffering.
Minister for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the visit on Facebook, stating that President Mahama seeks to personally assess the extent of the devastation and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to support those affected.
During his Independence Day address, President Mahama underscored the increasing risk of climate-related disasters, such as coastal erosion and flooding, which threaten livelihoods nationwide.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to implementing long-term measures, including sea defence projects and enhanced disaster response systems, to safeguard vulnerable communities.
This visit is not President Mahama’s first to the region following a tidal wave disaster. In 2021, he visited victims of a similar disaster, donating relief items and urging victims not to lose hope.
