Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has announced that the government of President John Mahama has removed “middlemen” from the premix fuel distribution chain.

The move is in fulfilment of President John Mahama’s 2024 campaign promise to eliminate intermediaries and ensure a direct supply of premix fuel to fishermen.

The Minister made the announcement Thursday in Kpando while on a working visit to fishing communities in the Volta Region.

The Minister while addressing a mini durbar disclosed that positions such as premix regional, district and Zonal coordinators have been abolished and their appointments revoked.

“Please note that we no longer have positions such as premix regional, district or zonal coordinators, it does not exist anymore, so all those people who had such positions, their appointment have been revoked and the premix administrator is working on an arrangement with them to exit. As at now, we will not be having in place a premix regional coordinator or district coordinator, the premix will leave Accra and go straight to the landing beach places”.

She explained that as part of the new arrangement, premix fuel will be transported directly from Accra to landing beach places, eliminating intermediaries.

The Minister who is also a member of parliament of the Shama constituency indicated that the decision would address artificial shortages created by intermediaries, which some fishermen have said frustrate their access to premix fuel.

She stressed that the new development would streamline the premix fuel distribution process as well as support the livelihoods of fishing communities.
