Mr Andrew Edwin Arthur, President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), has unveiled a new Code of Ethics aimed at promoting higher standards of ethical journalism in the country.
Speaking at the launch event, Mr Arthur highlighted the increasing challenges faced by the media, particularly in the digital age, where misinformation and the blurred distinction between news and opinion threaten the integrity of the profession.
Mr Arthur commended the Media Foundation for West Africa for partnering with PRINPAG on the initiative, calling it vital for reinforcing core journalistic values like truth, fairness, and accuracy.
The updated Code of Ethics will guide PRINPAG members, focusing on essential areas such as fact-checking, combating misinformation, protecting sources, using social media responsibly, and maintaining transparency in reporting.
During his address, Mr Arthur noted the rapidly evolving media landscape driven by the digital revolution but stressed the need for journalists to adhere to ethical standards to maintain public trust and uphold their role as society’s watchdogs.
He called on the government to support press freedom and media literacy while urging journalists to recommit to ethical journalism in their everyday work.
The introduction of the new Code marks a pivotal moment for PRINPAG as it works to ensure the future of ethical journalism in Ghana.
Mr Arthur also proposed a media forum to bring together local and international experts to discuss challenges facing the media and explore solutions to sustain journalism’s relevance in the digital era.
Seen as a crucial tool for safeguarding the role of the media in Ghana’s democracy, the new Code of Ethics aims to ensure that journalists continue to serve the public interest with professionalism and integrity.
