The National Secretary of the Progressive Transport Owners Association of Ghana (PROTOA), Exe Cephas Kudjo, has urged motorists to be more vigilant to avoid accidents during this rainy season when most often roads are more slippery and visibility is often poor, resulting in high rates of road accidents.
In an interview with GhanaNewsOnline.comgh, the national Secretary said “Driving in the rain can cause road crashes and drivers must know that the first rains are the most dangerous on our roads as they mix with oils spilled by vehicles. This mixture makes roads slippery.”
He said drivers must be checking the weather before heading out and that though the weather may be unpredictable “you should still stay updated with the advisory and weather forecasts. It is better to be safe than sorry, and it is okay to postpone an appointment because of heavy rains,” he advised motorists.
He also challenged drivers to ensure that their cars are in good condition, and that there is no telling what can happen during unclear weather, “so it’s advisable to check the condition of your car before venturing out. Make sure your head and tail lights are working, and that the brakes, turn signals, and windshield wipers aren’t faulty”.
Cephas Kudzo Exe again pleaded with all car owners to ensure that tires are well-maintained.
“Always go with an emergency kit that includes a spare tire, jumper cables, a toolkit, flashlights and extra batteries, and reflective triangles. Always wear your seatbelt. Make sure your headlights are on. Visibility is low when it’s raining so make sure that other drivers see you when you’re out on the road,” he said.
“That there is a need to drive or Go slow when raining because the roads become slick with oil during the rainy season, and vehicles will have less traction when driving. You drive slower than you normally would and always make sure you are within, even lower, the speed limit.
Give each driver space. Because of the slippery roads, it’s best to give other drivers more space to avoid collisions” he added .
