Provide us with police protection now – MPs
The leadership of Parliament has once again renewed calls for Members of Parliament to be given police protection at home.
This follows an attack on MP for Nhyiaso Constituency Kennedy Kankam at his home at gunpoint. The unidentified gunmen reported scaled a wall into the MP’s house and broke into his bedroom using a metal cutter.
He was reportedly held hostage for some time.
The Majority Leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu speaking on the issue on the Floor of Parliament questioned why District Chief Executives have been given police protection but MPs have been ignored.
“We have so many districts that have been created and yet appropriately so MMDCEs have been provided with police protection, why can’t we do same for Members of Parliament. I think going forward the country should make a determined effort and be decisive about this because we cannot continue and imperil the lives of Members of Parliament. Many of us have suffered robberies because many of us are not accompanied by security personnel. We were all saved by God’s grace, in the case of two of them they were shot at but it missed them. I think the time has come for the state to make a decision.”
