The Ghanaian football community is in mourning following the untimely death of former Black Stars striker Raphael Dwamena.
The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, joined several others in paying glowing tributes to the 28-year-old after he collapsed on the pitch during a league match in Albania.
Dwamena, who was playing for Egnatia against Partizani on Saturday, November 11, tragically passed away.
He was the leading scorer in the Albanian league this season with nine goals and had won nine caps, scoring two goals for Ghana.
The match was abandoned, and the Albanian federation has postponed all games scheduled in the country this week.
Kurt Okraku expressed his condolences, stating, “He served his country well and showed class any time he represented Ghana.”
The GFA, in an official statement, conveyed their deepest sympathies to Dwamena’s family during this difficult time.
Raphael Dwamena had a notable football career, including a proposed £14m move to Brighton in 2017, which unfortunately fell through after a medical issue.
He later played for Levante in La Liga and Real Zaragoza on loan. In 2021, he collapsed during a cup match in Austria but recovered and continued his playing career.
Dwamena had reportedly undergone a heart operation and had an automatic defibrillator implanted.
Levante, where Dwamena had previously played, shared their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with his family and his loved ones in these difficult moments. His legacy in our club will last forever.” Zaragoza also paid tribute, saying, “We are devastated by the sad news of the passing of our former player Raphael Dwamena. You will always be in the memory of Zaragoza´s fans. Rest in peace.”
The Ghanaian football community, as well as fans worldwide, are mourning the loss of a talented striker, and Dwamena’s contributions to the sport will be remembered.
