As many Metropolitans, Municipals and District assemblies are struggling to raise funds for development in their municipalities, Abuakwa south Municipal assembly on the other hand could raise a surplus of GHS 243,621.06 representing 23.3% in their 2019 target.
The hardworking, dynamic and innovative Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo disclosed this in his welcome address at the 7th Assembly of the Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly and the swearing-in of the newly elected Assembly Members at the forecourt of the municipal Assembly on thursday 23rd January 2020.
” I am proud to announce that in 2019, we were able to generate One Million, Two Hundred and Eighty-nine Thousand, Three Hundred and Forty-five Ghana Cedis and Six Pesewas (GH₵1,289,345.06) against a budgeted figure of One Million, Forty-five Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty-four Ghana Cedis (GH₵1,045,724.00), which is 123.3%. What this means is that we exceeded our target by 23.3%. ” – Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo read.
EC Declares Hon. Bernard Amoako Atta as Presiding memberHe therefore urged the newly elected Assembly members to get involved, work hard in 2020 and the ensuing years to help raise the standards of the revenue collection and boost the internal Generated fund (IGF).
“We are going to work even harder to improve on this revenue base we determined to drastically reduce the over reliance on central government subventions such as the Common Fund which is woefully inadequate to meet our ambitions. For this reason, the Assembly has among other strategies constituted a Municipal Donor Support Committee which is chaired by me and its mandate is to solicit for funds and other forms of support from NGOs, Philanthropists, other State Institutions and Corporate Organisations to complement what Government is able to provide.” – Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo added.
In all there are 24 elected assembly members, 11 Government appointees and one traditional leader. The member of parliament and MCE add up to 38 to constitute the 2020 assembly. Out of the 38 members, four (4) are females representing 10.53% while 34 are males representing 89.47%. Two out of the four females were elected while the other two were government appointees.
It is also interesting to note that only 3 members from the previous assembly were re-elected.
They proceeded to elect a presiding member and the keen contest were between Hon. Akwasi Awuah- Apedwa Asewase electoral area, and Hon. Bernard Amoako Atta – Asafo electoral Area. At the end of the second round, Hon. Bernard Amoako Atta, a banker was declared winner by the Abuakwa South District electoral officer, Christabel Asante Yeboah for pulling 25 votes as against 11 votes for Hon. Akwasi Awuah
The special guest, Hon. Ceceilia Abena Dapaah, Minister for sanitation and water resources also reiterated her position in making Abuakwa south clean.
Hon. kojo Ofori-Safo was sworn in office on February 1 2019 and has since worked tirelessly to ensure growth and development in Abuakwa South for being the first municipal Chief Executive.
