A recent leakage from a confidential survey conducted by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) has revealed a dramatic switch, replacing the outspoken MP Ken Agyapong with NAPO as the favored running mate to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
However, a more comprehensive survey report remains concealed within the secure confines of the NIB, painting a different landscape. Sources suggest that in the unreleased detailed survey report, Ken Agyapong emerged as the leading choice for Vice President Bawumia’s running mate among NPP members nationwide.
The sudden emergence of the leaked report endorsing NAPO mirrors an orchestrated effort to suppress the favorable sentiments towards Agyapong, raising suspicions within the realm of National Security, the Presidency, and the NIB regarding the motive behind the leak.
Amidst this upheaval, the intricate maneuvers underway suggest a concerted push to establish NAPO as the prime running mate, supported by influential figures aligned with the Energy Minister.
Notably, the circumstances surrounding the presumed poisoning of the late John Kumah, a favored candidate before his untimely demise, only deepen the intrigue surrounding the selection process.
The leaked survey report dubbed ‘Special Report On NPP RM’ discloses that, based on a survey involving 5,000 NPP delegates, a significant 76.27% expressed a preference for NAPO as the ideal running mate.
Other contenders like Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu garnered lesser support in comparison, while the unrevealed report from the previous survey pointed to overwhelming backing for Ken Agyapong.
Interestingly, sources reveal that before this June survey, the NIB had conducted an earlier secret survey on the subject of a running mate for Dr. Bawumia within the NPP nationwide in February 2024. In that survey, 200,000 party faithful had been asked to give their preference for a running mate and the overwhelming majority had said they preferred Ken Agyapong.
For some reason, this report never leaked. However, in the case of the one claiming Napo is the preferred running mate candidate, it leaked almost immediately. The NIB concluded the report on Friday 14 th June, and it was printed on 15 th June. From there the NIB was supposed to forward the report to the National Security Coordinator, Edward Asomani, who was in turn supposed to forward it to president Akufo-Addo.
The intricate details of these surveys, conducted using the ‘Kobo Collect’ survey app, have ignited a maelstrom of suspicion among the highest echelons of power.
The leaked report’s timing and subsequent revelations have fueled a web of distrust among key players, leaving the presidency, NIB, and National Security entangled in a web of uncertainty without a clear culprit in sight.
Furthermore, the leaked report’s implications threaten to strain relations between Ken Agyapong and the NPP, following his earlier defeat in the 2024 presidential primary.
Despite efforts to re-engage Agyapong with the party, the clandestine maneuvers behind the scenes have raised questions about the party’s true intentions, potentially alienating a crucial figure in the political landscape.
As the cloak-and-dagger saga unfolds, the future prospects for Vice President Bawumia’s running mate remain shrouded in uncertainty, with additional surveys planned by the NIB and National Security to gauge public sentiment leading up to the pivotal 2024 elections in August and October.
